Local Climate Change Solutions: Mitigation and Adaptation in the Baddeck Area

The CCTF is thrilled to extend an invitation to our next in-person gathering! After the success of our previous networking events in Sydney, we're eager to connect with climate-focused groups beyond the CBRM. Our event, themed "Local Climate Change Solutions: Mitigation and Adaptation in the Baddeck area," will feature presentations from Waterfront Baddeck, Dr. Bruce Hatcher, and Net Zero Atlantic.

Date: Saturday, March 23rd

Time: 10 am - 1 pm

Location: BOLD Centre, 490 Chebucto St, Baddeck, NS B0E 1B0

Presentations:
Steven Goldthwaite with Waterfront Baddeck
Steven will share a hands-on journey of how Waterfront Baddeck is engaging the community and volunteers to work to make Baddeck's waterfront economically and environmentally sustainable. Waterfront Baddeck blends a mix of local knowledge, scientific and academic research, and practical funding strategies to make climate adaption accessible and actionable within a community. His presentation will demonstrate that taking on climate change doesn’t always have to be daunting when you break it down into achievable steps and work to get the community onboard.

Rupinder Kaur with Net Zero Atlantic
Rupinder will deliver an insightful presentation on geothermal energy: from its basics to its potential in Cape Breton. She will explore its applications in Baddeck and beyond, including its use in greenhouses, residential properties, and various industries. She will also introduce Net Zero Atlantic, outlining their mission and current GeoCAT project (Geothermal Resource Capacity Assessment and Training Program).

Dr. Bruce Hatcher with The Bras d'Or Institute
Bruce is an ecologist who explores marine and estuarine ecosystems, and applies the resulting knowledge and skills to ecosystem-based planning and management. He will be presenting what we know about the Bras d'Or lake ecosystem undergoing change, with a specific focus on Baddeck (the area between Kidston Island and the mainland), and commenting on what measures are currently being done to mitigate and adapt to change, as well as what the path forward could look like.

We are excited for an insightful day of learning and collaboration, as we come together with individuals and organizations dedicated to building resilient, green-minded communities.
